Just once, he crossed the flood on the way to work. He had a small cut on his foot, but he did not think anything of it.<\/p>\n

That is the trap with leptospirosis. It does not show up while you are in the flood. It shows up days later, which is why people often fail to connect it to the real cause.<\/p>\n

How you get it, and why a wound is the danger<\/h2>\n

Leptospirosis spreads through water or mud contaminated with the urine of infected animals, often rats. It enters the body through a cut, a scrape, or even through the eyes and nose.<\/p>\n

That is why someone with a wound on their foot who wades through floodwater is at higher risk. You do not need to swim in it. Sometimes one crossing is enough.<\/p>\n
