She was eating again, even playing a little. So they slept soundly that night.

By morning, she was vomiting. Her hands were cold. Turns out, it was the real start of the problem, not the end of it.

This is the part of dengue most families do not know. And it is the reason some cases reach the hospital too late.

Why a falling fever can be the dangerous part

For most illnesses, a fever going down is good news. With dengue, it can be the opposite.

Dengue has what doctors call a critical phase, usually between the third and seventh day, right around the time the fever drops. This is when fluid can leak from the blood vessels and platelets can fall. So the moment things seem to be “getting better” is exactly when the watch should go up, not down.

This does not happen to everyone. But when it does, it moves fast. So the question is not “how high is the fever,” it is “what am I seeing now that it is coming down.”

The signs that mean go to the hospital now

If you see any of these, especially while the fever is dropping, do not wait:

Severe sakit ng tiyan

Repeated vomiting

Bleeding gums or nose, or unexplained bruising on the skin

Extreme drowsiness, restlessness, or being hard to wake

Cold, clammy hands or feet

Difficulty breathing

These are the warning signs of severe dengue. This is not the time to wait and see if it passes on its own.

While you are still at home

Give plenty of fluids or oral rehydration so the body does not get dehydrated. For the fever, use paracetamol only. Avoid aspirin and ibuprofen, because they can worsen bleeding. And when in doubt, get seen. Do not guess.

The good news: once you know about this one window, you are already seeing the signs earlier than most people do. That is exactly what changes the outcome.

Frequently asked questions

How many days after a bite does dengue appear?

Usually 4 to 7 days after an infected mosquito bite, but it can take up to 14.

Does everyone with dengue need to be admitted?

No. Many mild cases recover at home with enough fluids and rest. What matters is knowing the warning signs for when the hospital is needed.

What should the patient eat or drink?

Water, soup, oral rehydration. The most important thing is avoiding dehydration, not any specific food.

The one thing to remember

The hottest day of the fever is not the most dangerous day of dengue. Often, it is the day it seems to be getting better. If you know that, and you know the warning signs, you can act earlier.

If your child has had a fever for three days that will not go down, you can book a consult on NowServing and talk to a licensed doctor.
